Euro Weekender: Ninebar in Tilburg
I’ve left this post title in the same format as the first two purely for consistency, as it actually has no pictures from the gig. After Tournai, we decided to head to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. This is the memorial to those Commonwealth soldiers who fell in the First World War, and have never been found. When it was erected there were over 72,000 names engraved on the pillars, but when someone’s remains are identified they’re given a full military burial and their name is removed from the memorial at Thiepval. There are also 300 English and French graves near the base of the main memorial, serving as a symbol of co-operation between the two countries. As with the previous two posts, there are 360 degree panoramas at Today Is Free – 1, 2, 3.
Euro Weekender: Ninebar in Tournai
Following on from Friday’s gig in Paris, set off across France (avoiding toll roads) towards Belgium. There’s three different varieties of liqueurs going around the van, each of them a different colour. Piss-taking is being done, poor impressions of mutual acquaintances back home, people are generally relaxing and enjoying the weather. Then we spot a square of trees in the middle of a field, and flashes of white between the trunks. ‘Walk On The Wild Side‘ has come on on the mix CD, kind of melancholy sound appropriate to the appearance of a Somme cemetery. Drive on a bit further, we come to a stop at La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery and the mood is fully brought down to earth.
Euro Weekender: Ninebar in Paris
Back in March Ninebar had three shows booked in Europe – Paris, Tournai and Tilburg. Bit of confusion around vans, driving licences and the like, and Matty needed to find someone to drive a 9 seat minibus. Decided it was a good idea to do it, and booked the Friday and Monday off work. Friday morning, Matty gets out to Surrey, we get the van and head into London to pick up the rest. Hit shitty traffic on the A2 coming out of London, and so it’s a case of flooring it on the way to Dover (categorically not doing 100mph odd for most of the motorway). Pull into Dover with about 10 minutes to go till the ferry…
What happens when you call someone a liar, a coward and a thief?
With all the coverage over the Apollo anniversary, this came up again recently. Go to about 2:30 in. Makes you love Buzz Aldrin all the more.

Google Wave widening beyond developers
Google have announced that they’re opening the Wave preview beyond the developer community as of 30th September.
In other news: this morning we announced that we plan to start extending the Google Wave preview beyond developers on September 30th. This will take place on wave.google.com rather than the separate “sandbox” instance we are currently using, and we plan to involve about 100,000 users. In addition to the developers already using Wave, we will invite groups of users from the hundreds of thousands who offered to help report bugs when they signed up on wave.google.com.
Sign up if you’d be interested.

iPlayer: Expenses, The MPs’ Story
Listened to this on Radio 4 earlier, and it’s something that’s worth recommending to other people. It’s a Radio 4 documentary covering the personal impact on MPs following the expenses scandal. As the intro says, not the details, but the human side of the story.
